Buying RVs From Private Owners Vs From A Dealership

submit to reddit

If you want a lot of selection and the ability to make a quick purchasing decision, your best bet is to go to an RV dealer and see what they have available for sale.  If you like to spend the time and save money, you are better off buying a used RV for sale by owner.

It is important to mention that a dealership usually plans on marking up all the inventory they get by at least 40%.  This is because they have a large overhead associated with owning RVs that are declining in value, as well as paying interest on them.  In addition, they’ll have to pay to advertise, and may have to pay their salespeople.  In order to stay in business, they need to have a 35 to 40% markup on everything that they sell.

Interior Of Dealership RV

When you look for RVs for sale by owner you need to remember that it is a process and then it takes time.  It may be possible for you to find an amazing deal on the first RV that you look at, but usually you need to look at at least a dozen RVs before you come across one that is decent and priced right.  When you’re looking at RVs for sale by owner, your goal is to save money.  If you want some incentive, plan on saving yourself $200 for every hour that you spend looking.

For instance, if a dealership is selling an RV at a great price of $40,000, you should be able to find that same RV priced around $35,000, if you spend 25 hours looking for it.  This may require you to spend five or six Saturdays scouring the newspaper and making phone calls.  In the end, you’ll be glad you did, because you will be able to save yourself more than $200 per hour. Also, buying an RV for sale by owner is usually cheaper to begin with anyways.
